Requiem

for a choir, an organ and a large chamber ensemble

Commissioned by the Symphoniker Hamburg, the work is structured in 2 parts of 5 movements each, connected by an organ-solo interlude. Both parts begin with a quotation from the Gregorian Antiphon. The music begins in a traditional, liturgical music style, interspersed with contemporary gestures, textures, and orchestration techniques. It then evolves throughout the work until it reaches the closing chapter, In Paradisum, which embodies a transformation from the physical, manifested and expressive, to the detached, abstract and transcendental, symbolizing the notion of the soul’s passage into infinity.

Dedicated to Rüdiger Kruse, it was premiered in St. Katharina Church in Hamburg, with the Symphoniker Hamburg under the Baton of Ohad Ben-Ari and the EuropaChorAkademie, under the guidance of the late choirmaster, Joshard Daus.
